Sports Sans BS

Sometimes the way the web used to be is something we long for. That looks to be the concept behind Plain Text Sports. This website does one thing and one thing only: show sports scores in plain text. I came across Plain Text Sports on Twitter when apparently the developer CodeIsTheEnd decided he could do it better than ESPN, Yahoo, or even the leagues themselves. And honestly, I think it’s awesome. The page is sparse and laid out in a very simple fashion. But, as advertised, there’s no nonsense to be found. The developer’s code has all you need to…

Do A Kickflip

Perennial awesome dude Tony Hawk posted a video back in 2019 of him driving around town. Sounds boring, right? Well in fact he was hauling a bunch of skateboard decks he’d autographed and went looking for kids skateboarding around town. This is when the magic happened. Hawk repeatedly rolled down the window of his Tesla and shouted “do a kickflip!” to which the skater responded with the trick. Then Hawk simply handed them a board or other swag for doing it. The surprise and joy of people randomly having one of the best skaters on the planet roll on by…

Swingin’ It

Looking for the intensity of boxing and UFC but without the violence, blood, or bodily injuries? Then perhaps the Pillow Fight Championships are more your speed. Yes, professional pillow fighting is now a thing. Steve Williams, a serial entrepreneur, has put in some serious cash to make pillow fights the real deal. “There’s just something so cathartic about getting hit in the head with a pillow,” he tells Jordan Blumetti over at The Guardian. It’s a laughable statement but also pretty intriguing. How do you take something we all did as kids and morph it into a professional competition? The…

NYT Remembers Sports Exists

The NY Times is a fantastic publication, however if you’re a sports fan it’s not a place to go. The surprising hit since 2016 has been The Athletic. The Athletic is an online sports-focused site with a dedicated reporter for every North American team. For teams that have traditionally been under-covered or in markets where local newspapers have gone out of business, The Athletic has been a breath of fresh air. Now, it’ll become part of the New York Times for a cool $550 million. The deal brings The Times, which has more than eight million total subscriptions, quickly closer…

The Right Pucking Thing

The NHL expanded into Seattle, Washington over the summer with a new team called the Kraken. For a trainer on the Vancouver Canucks, this business decision for the league has literally saved his life. At an October game where the Canucks visited Seattle, Nadia Popovici, a Vancouver fan, spotted something wrong with Brian Hamilton’s neck. Popovici had written a note on her phone that said she was concerned about a mole she’d noticed on his neck. She made the text on the screen large and colourful, obviously hoping he’d notice it. He finally saw it but didn’t think much of…

Connor McDavid Is A Cheat Code

I rarely post about sports, but even as a hockey fan I can recognize this goal would excite anyone. Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers scored this amazing beauty against four players on the NY Rangers. I could describe it, but you should see it for yourself. Having this guy on any team is like inputting a cheat code. What a talent.

NHL Owners Vote to Make More Money

Can’t say I’m surprised at this one. The NHL at least had a legit case last season to allow advertising on helmets across the league and even sell the naming rights to the divisions. That’s right, last season was: the Scotia NHL North Division, Honda NHL West Division, Discover NHL Central Division and the MassMutual NHL East Division. Insert facepalm emoji here, right? But with a COVID-ravaged season with zero ticket sales, I could understand a season where more “creative” money had to come in. I hoped it would be a one and done kind of a thing. Now, we…
