Meta-less VR

With all the hullabaloo about the metaverse and Facebook Meta pitching it non-stop, it is a breath of fresh air to see a VR announcement that doesn't come from Zuckerberg. Sony revealed the second iteration of their Playstation VR system that will release later this year. Kyle Orland from Ars Technica has more.

As far as significant design changes, the PSVR2 will now offer a lens adjustment dial that can slide each lens side to side in order to match the player's interpupillary distance. Getting a good match there can be key to providing a sharp focus and preventing eye strain and motion sickness in VR, which is why such lens sliders have been a common feature on headsets like the Oculus Rift and Quest for years now.

The new PVSR, called PSVR2, has a nice refined design over the previous version. It matches the PS5 look quite well. The addition of vents is a big plus. There are many games that get you moving a lot will cause you to sweat a little. Even more impressive are the new controllers Sony is bringing to the system. Complete with control sticks and better precision tracking, I'm excited to see how far Sony has pushed this forward.

When PSVR came out in 2016, it was a shot in the dark. The Oculus Rift was new, expensive, and not ready for prime time. HTC's Vive was not as expensive as the Rift but it required a large space to use. Sony's stab at VR was incredible because it was priced low and turned a PS4 into a full-on VR machine. I picked up the PSVR when it came out and I cannot count the hours I spent playing game after game. Star Trek: Bridge Crew was an incredible experience and if you've ever tried a VR game, it's a good chance you've tried Beat Saber.

Sony is going to drip details out as the year progresses, but what they've shown so far is impressive. The hard part of the entire setup may be locating a PS5. They continue to be in a constant state of short supply.
