Goodbye Danny Tanner

News broke late Sunday that Bob Saget had passed at the too-young-age of 65. It was a shock to me, and to most I'm sure. Of course Saget was known as the straight-laced dad on Full House but he also was a really funny stand-up comedian. And he was the host of America's Funniest Home Videos, which was basically TikTok long before the internet was invented.

The man never stopped working though. Variety has a nice list of the work Saget did in the years since his most-notable roles:

Besides “Full House” and “AFHV,” Saget was also known for narrating CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother,” where he voiced the future Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) telling his children the story of how he met his wife. Hulu is set to release a follow-up, titled “How I Met Your Father” starring Hilary Duff, on January 18.

He directed the 1998 film “Dirty Work,” starring Norm Macdonald and Artie Lang, which was largely panned by critics and a flop at the box office but has since reached cult status among fans.

He also helmed the parody film “Farce of the Penguins,” played a fictionalized version of himself in HBO’s “Entourage,” hosted the game shows “1 vs. 100” and “Nashville Squares” and appeared on the mystery singing competition “The Masked Singer” in 2020. Known for his dark, sarcastic humor, Saget’s 2014 “That’s What I’m Talkin’ About,” was nominated for best comedy album at the Grammys

It's hard to know anyone older than 13 or 14 who didn't watch Full House. The show was a mainstay during ABC's TGIF block on Friday nights. TGIF was a powerhouse of four half-hour sitcoms that dominated the airwaves and launched massive hits. Family Matters owes its initial success to Full House's lead-in. The same for the Patrick Duffy / Suzanne Summers Step-By-Step, a modern-take on the Brady Bunch mixed family.

I think the hardest part of Saget's passing is his work in a fatherly role. He was seen as wholesome. Of course his stand-up comedy was anything but that, but that's Saget's charm. He will certainly be missed.
