Wordle: The Un-Game

Games are insanely popular on mobile to the point where entire companies have been built around them. Many come and go, but some have a real impact. Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Threes, Words With Friends, and more have become juggernauts on mobile. Now, we get a new contender: Worldle.

Created by Josh Wardle, the idea is simple: guess a 5-letter word in six tries. But that's where the game aspect of Wordle ends. This game is not an app. Wordle exists only on the web. It does not have ads. It doesn't force you to watch videos, offer purchases, timers, or other nonsense. There is only one word per day. That's it. That's the game. And all of this makes Wordle so fun.

While other games send notifications to your phone hoping you’ll come back throughout the day, Wordle doesn’t want an intense relationship.

“It’s something that encourages you to spend three minutes a day,” he said. “And that’s it. Like, it doesn’t want any more of your time than that.”

If he were optimizing the game to gain as many players as possible, he would have included a link at the end of the tweet that the tool generates, he said. But after looking into it, he said it would have looked “trashy” and not as visually compelling, and he liked the grid’s mysterious air, which he felt piqued people’s interest.

NY Times

The game is great and I've enjoyed it so far. It's so simple, yet a lot of fun. Plus the idea that it's only one game per day makes it something I look forward to playing. Obviously, it's free to play. Give it a whirl here.
